No. 32 Men's Tennis Grabs 6-1 Win Over Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The No. 32 MIT men's tennis team snapped Springfield's six-match win streak while handing the Pride its first NEWMAC loss as the Engineers defeated Springfield 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon on the Appleton Tennis Courts.  

 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 6, Springfield 1 
  • Records: No. 32 MIT (10-6 Overall, 5-1 Overall); Springfield (10-6 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • MIT won two of three doubles to claim a 1-0 lead. Hunter Liao and Tyler Li won No. 1 doubled over Tim Norin and Ethan Gomulka, 6-2, and Nicholas Liu and Jeremy Yu took No. 2 doubles by a 6-4 score over Marc Villanueva and Austin Prendiville. 
  • The Engineers made it 3-0 with wins in No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Liao defeated Austin Guzman 6-1, 6-0 and Li followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Prendiville.  
  • After dropping the first set to Liam Huppke 2-6 in No. 5 singles, Yu rallied to take the next two sets by scores of 6-1, 6-2. 
  • SangHyuk Im dropped set one, 1-6 to Akito Shimamura in three singles before rallying to win the next two, 6-3, 6-4. 
  • Liu fell to Ethan Gomulka 5-7 in the opening set but won set two, 6-4 and took the third set in a super tie-break to close out the match in six singles. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT wraps up NEWMAC play on Saturday, April 18 as they travel to Salve Regina for a 2:30 PM contest.
