No. 8 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 52 Smith, 7-0, on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 8 MIT women's tennis team won its sixth match in a row following a 7-0 victory over No. 52 Smith College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon.

  • Records: No. 8 MIT (13-2 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC); No. 52 Smith (6-8 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES: HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Zeng won three straight games to defeat Emrich, 6-2, in the opening set at No. 2 singles. Emrich claimed back-to-back games to tie the second set at 3-3. Zeng replied with a pair of victories, however, Emrich broke Zeng to take the next game. Zeng thwarted the comeback attempt as she held on for a 6-4 win.
  • In the No. 5 position, Chen jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 decision against Chin in the opening frame. After conceding the first game of the second set, Chen won four in a row before going on to post another 6-2 result.
  • Saina Deshpande clinched the match by defeating Hauser, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1 slot.
  • In the No. 3 spot, Driscoll won three games in a row to pull away for a 6-2 victory versus Cambron in the first set. Driscoll gradually established a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Cambron claimed the next game. Driscoll responded with back-to-back wins to secure the 6-3 victory.
  • Rayna Li topped Wang, 6-0, in the first set at No. 6 singles. In the second set, Wang built a 4-2 lead, but Li rallied for a 6-4 come-from-behind victory.
  • In the No. 4 position, Sophia Yang won back-to-back games to take a 4-3 edge against Simunyola in the opening set. Simunyola picked up the next game, however, Yang bounced back by taking the next two for a 6-4 victory. After a back-and-forth start to the second set, Yang rattled off four wins in a row to register a 6-2 decision.
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams will be on the road for NEWMAC matches on Tuesday, April 21. MIT will play Springfield College at 3:30 PM while Smith will take the court against Wheaton College at 4:00 PM.
