CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row, top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 7 MIT defeated No. 4 seed Smith College, 4-0, in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon at the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. With the win, the Engineers secured a spot in the title match for the 13
th consecutive season.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 7 MIT 4, No. 55 Smith 0
- Records: No. 7 MIT (16-2 Overall); No. 55 Smith (9-9 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
- Anastasia Samets and Katie Driscoll defeated Olivia Chin and Emily Wang, 6-0, in the No. 3 position.
- After trading games to start the match, Artemis Pados and Alaina Kolli claimed the next four to defeat Ava Emrich and Heidi Cambron, 6-2, in the top spot and secure the doubles point.
- Chloe Zeng and Carley Chen had a 5-4 edge against Ayla Hauser and Natazya Simunyola before the match was abandoned.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
- Saina Deshpande won three games in a row to take a 3-1 lead against Emrich in the first set in the No. 1 slot. An exchange of games followed which resulted in Emrich narrowing the gap to 4-3. Deshpande replied with back-to-back victories to take the set, 6-3. Desphande then went on to record a 6-1 decision in the second set.
- Sophia Yang topped Simunyola, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot.
- Zeng topped Hasuer, 6-2, 6-1, to clinch the match from the No. 2 position.
- In the No. 3 spot, Driscoll led Cambron, 6-2, 4-4, when the match was halted.
- The No. 5 singles match of Rayna Li and Marielle Sauber and the No. 6 match featuring Samets and Wang were not played.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will host either nationally ranked No. 8 Babson College or No. 39 Wellesley College in the NEWMAC Championship on Sunday, May 3 at 12:00 PM. This will be the sixth consecutive meeting between both teams in the title match.
