Engineers Open Season with Convincing Wins over Bates and Colby

LEWISTON, Maine – The MIT men's track and field team made the trek up to Bates College to take on the host Bobcats along with Colby College in its season opening meet on Saturday. The Engineers won seven of the 17 events outright for a total of 192 points, compared to 116 for Bates and just 45 for Colby. Kenneth Cooper had an outstanding day for the Cardinal and Gray, earning a pair of second-place finishes with impressive efforts in the shot put and weight throw.

Cooper reached the NCAA provisional qualifying mark with his 59-2.25 foot toss in the weight throw. He followed that up with an effort of 50-0 feet in the shot put, becoming just the seventh thrower in program history to reach the 50-foot mark in indoor shot put.

Logan Trimble earned a pair of individual victories, narrowly clipping teammate Logan Daum in the 800 while also leading a strong team effort in the mile. Trimble won the 800 with a time of 2:00.43 and completed the mile in 4:19.91. In the mile, Tech runners earned six of the top seven positions.

Mattias Flander led the way to a sweep of the top four positions in the triple jump with his 44-0.75 foot leap. Tech also swept the top four in the 600 meters, as David Way came through first with a time of 1:26.05. Timothy Galvin was just behind in 1:28.64.

Additional victories were earned by Tyler Singer-Clark (23.25) in the 200 meters, Matthew Falk (6-3.25 feet) in the high jump and the MIT 4x400 meter relay squad of Brian Gager, Patrick Marx, Jacob Jurewicz and Nick Leonard.

MIT will get a chance to compete with some of the top teams in New England next weekend, as the Engineers take part in the Springfield College Invitational. The meet begins Saturday, January 22 at 12:30 p.m.
