Men's Track and Field Dominates the Field at Springfield Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The MIT men's track and field traveled to Springfield College over the weekend and displayed great depth en route to a convincing first-place finish out of eight squads at the Springfield Invitational. The Engineers posted an impressive total of 215 points, winning eight of 19 events, to more than double the total of second-place Tufts with 99 points.

Kenneth Cooper had another solid showing in the weight throw and the shot put, winning both events easily. Cooper reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the weight throw with a toss of 57-7.00 feet, nearly five feet better than teammate Chinedum Umachi (52-9.25 feet) in second. Cooper also reached the 50-foot mark in the shot put, with a 50-2.50 foot winning effort.

In the 3000, Daniel Harper and Roy Wedge had a thrilling race to the finish, with Harper (8:47.18) coming in just 0.35 seconds ahead of the runner-up Wedge. Patrick Marx won the 600 meters with an impressive time of 1:23.19 while Logan Trimble (2:32.18) pulled away from the field in the 1000. Kyle Hannon also picked up first-place points for the Cardinal and Gray in the mile with a time of 4:25.35.

Matthew Falk earned a win in the high jump, clearing 6-3.25 feet. Tech's other event win came from the 4x800 meter relay team of David Way, Logan Trimble, Gilbert O'Neil and Dawit Zewdie.

MIT will compete in the Terrier Classic at Boston University next weekend while also hosting its own Coed Invite on Saturday, January 29. The Terrier Classic begins on Friday, January 28 and continues Saturday.
