SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The MIT women's track and field team traveled to California for its annual spring break training trip, which culminated with a competition in the Westmont Collegiate Classic on Saturday. The No. 4 ranked Engineers captured the team title with 84.67 points, ahead of second-place Fresno Pacific University.
Sophomore Jacqueline Brew (Amherst, N.H.) was the leading-point earner for the Cardinal and Gray, accounting for 13.75 points, as she competed in six different events. Brew led off the winning 4x100 relay that finished in 48.32 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in the country on the season. Brew was joined on the relay by seniors Portia Jones (Queens, N.Y.) and Jamie Simmons (Carlsbad, Calif.) and freshman Madeleine Bairey (Pebble Beach, Calif.). Brew also took third place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.1 seconds) and long jump (17-3.50 feet), fourth in the triple jump (34-9.75 feet) and sixth in the 100 meters (12.75 seconds).
Freshman Michelle Johnson (Glendora, Calif.) out leapt Brew in the triple jump, winning the event with a 35-9.50-foot effort. That mark, a personal-best for Johnson, ranks 20th in Division III and 4th all-time at MIT.
Simmons also had a busy afternoon, winning the 400m with a time of 57.56 seconds, ninth-fastest in the countrym and earning fifth place in the 400-hurdles (65.05). Jones was a third-place finisher in the 400 IH (63.48 seconds) and a runner-up in the 100 HH (14.8 seconds).
Other event winners for MIT came in the pole vault, junior Lauren Kuntz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at 12-1.50 feet, the 3000m Steeplechase, senior Maggie Lloyd (Sacramento, Calif.) in 11:29.10. Lloyd led a sweep of the top three for Tech in the steeplechase, as sophomores Martina de Geus (Los Altos, Calif.) and Claire O'Connell (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) came through in second and third place, respectively.
Tech will compete in the annual Engineer's Cup meet next weekend with RPI and WPI. The meet is slated for Saturday, April 7 and will be hosted by RPI.
