Men's Volleyball Battles at Live Free or Die Tournament

NASHUA, N.H. – At the inaugural Live Free or Die Tournament hosted by Daniel Webster College and Rivier College, the No. 9 MIT men's volleyball team compiled a ledger of 1-3 this past weekend. The Engineers (2-3) fell to SUNY New Paltz, 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 16-14, but defeated Daniel Webster, 25-22, 25-16, 37-39, 19-25, 15-10, on Saturday. Facing a pair of nationally-ranked foes, MIT dropped decisions to No. 13 Baruch College (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-27, 24-22) and No. 7 Rivier (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) on Sunday. Senior Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, Mo.) represented the Cardinal and Gray on the all-tournament team.

In the opener with New Paltz, Hohenberger tallied 11 digs, nine kills, four aces, and two blocks while junior Ken Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) led the way with 12 kills. Senior Patrick Vatterott (St. Louis, Mo.) posted eight kills and two blocks as sophomore Alex Klein (San Diego, Calif.) notched seven kills and three blocks. Freshman Tavish Smith (Oceanside, Calif.) bolstered the front row with six kills and three blocks while junior Paul Syta (Fairport, N.Y.) registered 43 assists and eight digs. Freshman Brendan Chang (Laytonsville, Md.) anchored the defense with 15 digs.

Sophomore Chris Omahan (Mount Vernon, Ohio) racked up 18 kills, a .432 hitting percentage, eight digs, and three aces in MIT's five-set win over Daniel Webster. Classmates Brad Gross (Centreville, Va.) and Tyler Nolan (Sayville, N.Y.) totaled 15 and eight kills, respectively, as fellow sophomore Andrew Busse (Mount Prospect, Ill.) tacked on seven kills, five digs, and three blocks. Freshman Andrew Hochstadt (Roselle, Ill.) chipped in five digs, four aces, and two blocks while classmate Kevin Tu (Saratoga, Calif.) recorded eight digs, and two aces. Siebert earned a trio of aces as Chang collected 13 digs. Junior Evan Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) tallied 42 assists, five digs, and two aces while Syta dished out 11 assists in two sets.

In the Engineers' third five-set battle of the weekend, Hohenberger compiled 23 kills, 12 digs, and two aces against Baruch. Siebert amassed 18 kills, nine digs, three blocks, and two aces while Vatterott recorded 10 kills, eight digs, and two blocks. Klein rounded out the attack with eight kills as Chang amassed 28 digs, followed by 11 from Omahan. Syta finished with 56 assists and nine digs.

Hohenberger accounted for 12 of MIT's 29 kills and two of its four aces in its loss to Rivier. Syta totaled 28 assists, 10 digs, and two solo blocks while Chang picked up five digs.

Next up for the Engineers will be a road trip to Elms College on Thursday, January 31.
