Engineers Split, Fall to Buffalo State and Defeat Grove City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – MIT softball went 1-1 in their games on Monday afternoon at the National Training Center in Florida, falling to Buffalo State College, 10-5 and picking up a win against Grove City College later that day with a score of 8-1. The Engineers are now 3-4 for the season and 1-4 for their Spring Trip.

In the first game, MIT was led by sophomore Sarah Van Belleghem (Los Gatos, Calif.), who went 2 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs earned. Freshman Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.) had one hit and one RBI, earning the only homerun of the game. Senior Anna Christensen (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and sophomore K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill.) also scored.

Freshman Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) allowed seven hits and five runs, but struck out nine. Sophomore Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) allowed five hits and five runs and struck out three.

In the second game against Grove City, the score remained tied at 0-0 at the top of the fourth when Jensen scored off a sacrifice bunt by Fodor and an error by the third baseman. The Wolverines tied the score at the bottom of the fifth when Sarah Morris scored their first and only run of the game.

The top of the eighth inning was when the Engineers really showed up, scoring seven runs to end the game. Jensen started the inning off by earning her second run off the game and her third of the day. Van Belleghem and Christensen both scored their second run of the day and Fodor, senior Leah Alpert (Needham, Mass.), sophomore Kelly Wang (La Canada, Calif.) and freshman Alex Burgess (Chelmsford, Mass.) each earned their first, ever-increasing their lead over Grove City. The game ended at the end of that inning with a score of 8-1 in MIT's favor.

Fodor pitched the entire game, allowing only one run and striking out 12. She earned her first win of the season.

The Engineers will return to the pitch tomorrow bright and early when they face Indiana Tech at 9:00 a.m. and St. Thomas (Minn.) at 11:00 a.m.
