MIT Softball Falls to Springfield College in Conference Double Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT softball team fell to Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) double header on Wednesday afternoon with a score of 9-0 in the first game and 8-0 in the second. The Engineers dipped to 15-12 for the season and 5-7 in NEWMAC play, while the Pride are now 18-16 and 10-2 in conference play.

In the opener, senior Anna Christensen (Vernon Hills, Ill.) had the Engineers' only hit, breaking up Jennifer Joseph's no-hit bid with a single in the fourth inning.

Freshman Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) pitched all 4.2 innings, giving up nine runs, only three of which were earned, off eight hits, while striking out three batters. She is now 5-7 for the season.

Four different Engineers got hits in the second game. At the top of the second, senior Leah Alpert (Needham, Mass.) singled to right field and advanced to second on a single by freshman Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.), but the two were left on base at the end of the inning.

At the top of the fourth, Christensen had her second hit of the day when she singled to left field and was followed by both sophomore Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) and Alpert making it to first base on fielder's choices. In the fifth inning, sophomore Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) singled, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill.) and making it safely to third on an out by freshman Alex Burgess (Chelmsford, Mass.). She was left on base, however, with the addition of one more out.

Fodor pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing nine runs and seven hits while striking out one. Marshall pitched the final inning, giving up one run off two hits. Fodor now has a record of 9-4 for the season.

The Engineers will return to action on Friday, April 19 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to face Clark University in another NEWMAC double header at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
