MIT Softball Splits with UMass Boston

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT softball team split in its game with UMass Boston on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game with a score of 2-1 and falling in the second, 2-1. The Engineers are now 12-9 for the season, while UMass Boston is 6-18.

With one run by sophomore Sarah Van Belleghem (Los Gatos, Calif.) at the top of the first inning and one by Taryn Asta at the bottom of the sixth, the first game went into extra innings when the score remained tied at 1-1 at the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth inning, sophomore Kelly Wang (La Canada, Calif.) scored on an illegal pitch, giving the Engineers the lead. With the Beacon unable to score, the game ended with an MIT victory.

Van Belleghem was 3-for-3 with one run. In seven innings on the mound, sophomore Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) earned the win, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out eight. Freshman Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) pitched the final inning, recording her first save of the season and allowing zero hits and zero runs.

MIT got off to a good start in the first inning of the second game when Marshall scored off a single by senior Leah Alpert (Needham, Mass.). MIT remained ahead until the bottom of the third, when Kelsey Sevenson and Lyndsey Capra both scored on errors a few batters apart. Alpert was close to scoring, singling and then advancing two bases on errors, but the inning ended before she could make it home.

Alpert was 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Marshall was 1-for-3 with one run. Marshall was on the mound for all 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs and striking out four. She is now 4-5 for the season.

The Cardinal and Gray will next host Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) double header on Friday, April 12 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
