Softball Sweeps Clark in Last NEWMAC Double Header of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WORCESTER, Mass. - MIT's softball team swept Clark University in its final New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) double header on Monday afternoon. In the first game, the Engineers won by a score of 3-1 and, in the second, Tech had a 5-3 win over the Cougars. MIT improved to 10-18 and 7-11 in NEWMAC play, while Clark dipped to 11-19 and 6-12 in conference action.

Almost all of the Engineers had a hand in the two wins. In the first game, all three of MIT's runs were scored in the first inning. Junior Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman and advanced to second when freshman Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.) made it to first on a fielder's choice. When sophomore Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, Fodor scored the first run of the day.

Junior Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) doubled to right center, allowing Jensen and Trueworthy to score and picking up two RBI for herself. She made it as far as third before a pop out ended the inning.

Tech held a three-run lead until the bottom of the sixth, When Corrie Derosier singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. When Alyssa Wright singled to center field, Derosier scored the Cougars' lone run of the game. MIT held Clark to just one hit in the final inning, ending the game swiftly.

In the second game, the Cougars jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tatiana Chunis hit a two-RBI single to left field, allowing Wright and Maya Allen to score. Clark maintained an edge until the top of the fifth, when freshman Mackenzie Donnelly (Helena, Mont.) led off by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) and scored on an RBI double by fellow freshman Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.).

Another run by Wright in the bottom of the fifth gave Clark a 3-1 advantage that would not last very long. In the top of the sixth, McLaughlin singled and advanced to third when classmate K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill.) reached on a throwing error. Wopat made it to second and McLaughlin stole home. On a single by freshman Helen Rosenthal (Bethesda, Md.) Wopat advanced to third, and both scored on a double by Monica Shifflet, helping MIT to take the lead.

Tech's final run came when Natalie Shifflet singled and advanced to third on the throw and a throwing error, allowing Monica Shifflet to make it home. With its 5-3 lead over the Cougars, the Engineers held on to that lead for two more Clark at-bats, allowing just one hit during that time.

In the first game, Fodor earned the win in 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and one run and striking out an impressive 10 batters. Donnelly earned the win at the mound in game two, pitching all seven innings and allowing 11 hits and three runs, while striking out four batters.

MIT's final double header of the 2014 season will take place tomorrow, April 22, when the Engineers travel to Rhode Island to face Salve Regina University at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
