Women's Lightweight Crew Closes Fall at Foot of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was not ideal racing conditions on the Charles River today, with a very windy morning facing the crews for the Foot of the Charles. In the end to the fall season the Engineers saw four crews in action, a Varsity 8 crew, two Novice 8 boats as well as a Varsity 4 team.

With the conditions too treacherous in the basin today's racing was moved up river, with the start placed at Riverside. The Varsity 8 crews raced to North Beacon Street Bridge, a course that was approximately 6,000 meters in length. The Varsity 8 team had a strong first mile, but had a hard time keeping the pace into the wind around Weeks. The team then put together a strong effort from Anderson to Elliott, but facing a headwind again after Elliott struggled to maintain their pace. The final time for the Engineers was a 25:07.0 which was good for 18th overall and fourth among the lightweight crews, two seconds ahead of Boston University's 2nd lightweight crew.

MIT's Varsity 4 boat had a good showing, passing one crew on the course that started at Riverside and ended at the Head of the Charles finish, a distance of approximately 4,000 meters. The only lightweight team in the field, the Engineers took third overall with their effort of 17:33.1.

MIT's Novice 8 crews performed well in the challenging conditions, with the team's also racing on the 4,000-meter course and turning in times of 19:46.0 and 22.00.1. It's been a great fall season for our walk-on novice crews," said assistant Coach Lauren Ayers. "Though these were challenging conditions to race in, our crews did a great job of maintaining composure."

"Today marks Coach Ayers last race as interim assistant coach, and I'm very sad to see her go," remarked head coach Claire Martin-Doyle. "Having her back at the boathouse has been a pleasure and her coaching of the walk-on group has been outstanding. MIT lightweight rowing has been lucky to have her as part of the coaching staff this fall."
