No. 2 Engineers Place Third at New England Indoor D3 Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: Gantcher Center - Tufts University - Medford, Mass.

- The Lead: At the New England Division III Indoor Championship, the MIT men's indoor track and field team placed third overall with a team score of 84 points. The Engineers, ranked No. 2 nationally, earned a pair of individual wins and set one meet record while picking up All-New England honors for 13 individuals and three relays.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Sophomore Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) broke a 30-year old meet record in the 5,000 meters as he cruised to a 22-second victory in a time of 14:33.73. His mark broke the previous record, set in 1987, by a 1.93-second margin. Maloney is currently ranked third nationally in the event with a performance earlier this month at the Tufts Cupid Challenge.

- Sophomore Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) picked up the victory in the pole vault as he cleared 15 feet, five inches. Teammate Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) scored as well as he posted a vault of 14 feet, 11 inches. In the triple jump, junior William Ruschel (Bethel Park, Pa.) was second in 46 feet, 10 inches, followed by junior Jason Villanueva (Hesperia, Calif.) in eighth place with a leap of 44 feet, 4.25 inches. The high jump also had a pair of scorers as freshman Chris Washington (Frisco, Texas) and freshman Alec Reduker (Newburyport, Mass.) both earned All-New England honors. Washington was fourth at a jump six feet, six inches, while Reduker cleared six feet, four inches.

- In the relays, the 4x800 squad led the way with a third-place finish in a time of 7:57.15. The distance medley squad was fourth in 10:26.13, while the 4x400 team placed eighth in a time of 3:25.96.

- Graduate student Matthew Deyo (Syracuse. N.Y.) placed second in the 3,000 meters in 8:22.12, while junior Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, N.J.) finished in third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.47 seconds. For Deyo, that time currently places him seventh nationally.

- Junior Tre Albritten (Plano, Texas) was third in the 60 meters in a time of 7.02 seconds, along with a fifth-place performance in the 600 by freshman Tyndale Hannan (Dublin, Ohio) as the rookie crossed in 1:22.79. Sophomore Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) earned All-New England honors in both the 1,000 meters and the mile, placing fourth in each event. Gilson finished in 2:30.93 in the 1,000, followed by a time of 4:17.19 in the mile.
