No. 2 Men's Track and Field Capture Six Events at the Tufts Cupid Challenge

THE BASICS:

- Location: Gantcher Center - Medford, Mass.

- The Lead: On Saturday at the Tufts Cupid Challenge, the No. 2 ranked MIT men's indoor track and field team won six events and had a number of solid performances in the meet that had no team scoring. The Engineers have been ranked No. 2 nationally since the preseason poll came out in early January. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) shattered his personal-best as he crossed in a time of 14:26.80. The mark was just .25 shy of the MIT school record, while ranking him second in the nation this season. Junior Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, N.J.) was victorious by .27 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 8.43 seconds. Freshman Tyndale Hannan (Dublin, Ohio) also earned an individual win on the track as he captured the 600 meters in 1:22.66.

- In the field events, freshman Alec Reduker (Newburyport, Mass.) tied for first in the high jump at six feet, eight inches, while freshman Steven Speck (LaGrange, Ohio) was third in that event at six feet, four inches. Sophomore Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) led an MIT sweep of the top three spots in the pole vault as he cleared 14 feet, 11 inches. Freshman Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) was second while also clearing 14 feet, 11 inches, along with a third-place effort from freshman Raja Rajcic (Lubbock, Texas) at 14 feet, 5.25 inches.

- Junior William Ruschel (Bethel Park, Pa.) won the triple jump at 46 feet, 11 inches, followed by junior Ryan Prinster (Boulder, Colo.) in second with 43 feet, 8.5 inches and junior Jason Villanueva (Hesperia, Calif.) in fifth with a jump of 42 feet, seven inches. Junior Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was the winner in the shot put at 45 feet, 8.5 inches, along with a fifth-place showing by sophomore Jon Fakkema (Blaine, Wash.) at 42 feet, 5.5 inches. Fakkema was also the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 51 feet, 9.25 inches.

- In the 800, sophomore Nathan Munet (Elkhart, Ind.) crossed in second at 1:56.84, followed by freshman Simon Alford (Dublin, Ohio) in third at 1:58.52. The Engineers also took second and third in the 400 with sophomore Tom Frejowski (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Ill.) running 51.53 and 51.63 seconds, respectively. Newman was also fifth in the 200 with a time of 23.36.

- Sophomore Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) was third in the 1,000 meters overall and the first collegiate finisher at 2:32.18, while also placing fifth in the mile at 4:20.06.

- MIT returns to action on February 10th and 11th at the BU David Hemery Invitational. In addition, the Engineers are hosting the Gordon Kelly Invitational on the 11th beginning at Noon.
