- The Lead: On the final day of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play for the 2017 season, the MIT softball team fell twice to WPI. WPI won game one 2-0 and game two by a 4-3 score. With seeding now determined, MIT will be the fifth seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament and play fourth-seeded Babson College on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at No. 1 seed WPI. The winner of that game will face WPI at approximately 4:30 p.m. the same day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
- WPI got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Ama Biney led off with a five pitch walk. She then stole second and moved to third on a throw by the catcher that ended up in centerfield. Two batters later, Renee LeClaire earned a walk and stole second with no one covering the bag. With the throw down, Biney stole home for the 1-0 lead.
- Worcester's Engineers added one more in the bottom of the second when Lindsay Gurska homered down the left field line.
- MIT had its best scoring chance of the game in the top of the fifth after the Engineers loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Erika Anderson (Carlsbad, Calif.) singled up the middle, senior Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) reached on a throwing error by the first baseman on a bunt attempt and junior Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) intentionally walked. However, WPI starter Mackenzie Phillips struck out both Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) and Michelle Wist (Cypress, Texas) to preserve her 2-0 advantage.
- Phillips went on to get MIT out 1-2-3 in both the top of the sixth and the top of the seventh as WPI held on for the 2-0 game one win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT freshman Sarah Von Ahn (West Linn, Ore.), senior Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.), freshman Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.), classmate Sierra Rosenzweig (Anchorage, Alaska), and Anderson all notched single hits in game one for the Engineers.
- Phillips earned her 11th win of the spring and is now 11-4 as she scattered five hits, allowed one walk and struck out five over her complete game effort. MIT starter Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) shouldered the loss (11-5) on two runs (one earned), three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts over six innings in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game Two
- Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, WPI pushed across what proved to be the game-winning run. After Nasser got the first out of the inning, Biney was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and then came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher. WPI reliever Casey Arpin retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the 4-3 win and two game sweep.
- WPI got on the board in the bottom of the first when Cassie Graca notched an infield single, which led to Biney coming around on a throwing error. MIT answered in the top of the third when N. Shifflet brought home Joseph on an RBI single to center. Joseph had reached base to lead off the inning on a double over the Biney's head in center. WPI, however, answered right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the third.
- Both teams traded runs in the fourth and MIT added one in the fifth on a single by M. Shifflet, which scored Trueworthy, who came across the plate from second on a throwing error by the right fielder. The score would remain tied at 3-3 until WPI got its game winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Trueworthy led the way for MIT with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two runs scored as the number seven hitter. At the top of the order, Joseph, N. Shifflet, and Wist all notched one hit, while M. Shifflet and Rosenzweig both added a single hit to account for MIT's seven in game two. N. Shifflet registered both of MIT's RBI's in the nightcap.
- Arpin, who came on in relief in the fourth inning, earned her sixth win of the year to improve to 6-1. The junior tossed three and two-thirds innings allowing just one unearned run and two hits. Nasser, who returned to the circle for game two, took the loss (11-6) on six inning of work as she allowed four runs (all earned), seven hits, four walks and struck out one.
