Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score:

Babson College 1, MIT 0 (Game One NEWMAC Tournament)

- Records: MIT (21-10); Babson College (24-12)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Rooftop Field)

- The Lead: A sacrifice fly by Babson's Ashley Tango in the bottom of the first and a shutout pitching performance by Ali Reilly led the Beavers to a 1-0 win over MIT in game one of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon at WPI's Rooftop Field.

With the win, Babson will play WPI in game three of the double-elimination tournament at 4:45 this afternoon, while MIT will have to wait until tomorrow to take on Wheaton College in an elimination game beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Worcester. Coming into today's opening game, Babson was ranked No. 8 in the latest NCAA Division III New England rankings, while MIT was ranked No. 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Babson struck for the game's opening run in the bottom of the first when Tango brought home classmate Josephine Mares on a sacrifice fly to right field. Mares led off the frame with a bloop double to left center and moved all the way to third on a single to right by Leslie Moore as the Beavers led 1-0 after one.

- MIT had its best scoring chances of the game in the top of the fifth and top of the seventh when the Engineers had runners at third base, but just couldn't get the run across. In the fifth, Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) began the frame by reaching on an error and then stole second.  After senior Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) pushed her to third on a sacrifice bunt, Reilly struck out two of the last three batters she faced to end the threat.

- Attempting to tie the game or take the lead in the final inning, MIT sophomore Erika Anderson (Carlsbad, Calif.) led off the frame with a double off the fence in left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by M. Shifflet. The Engineers brought up pinch hitter Kim Veldee (Kirkland, Wash.), but she lined the ball to shortstop and Anderson was out retreating to third to end the game with Babson on top 1-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Reilly earned the win for Babson as she pushed her record to 11-7 with her two-hit complete game shutout in game one. Reilly added six strikeouts and three walks to lead the Beavers to game three of the tournament. MIT starter Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) also had a strong effort in the circle (11-7) as she tossed six innings yielding one run (earned), six hits, two strikeouts, and one walk with just 69 pitches.

- Anderson and senior captain Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.) were the only two Engineers to get hits off of Reilly in game one this afternoon, while Mares went 2-for-2 with the only run scored at the top of the lineup for the Beavers.

UP NEXT:

- MIT will play Wheaton College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game on day two of the NEWMAC Tournament which will be played at WPI's Rooftop Field. Babson moves on to play WPI in game three of the tournament which will begin at 4:45 this afternoon.
