No. 11 Men's Track and Field Places Second at Bates

THE BASICS:

- Location: Lewiston, Maine (Russell Street Track - Bates College)

- The Lead: On Saturday, the No. 11 ranked MIT men's track and field team placed second out of four teams in a meet hosted at Bates College as the Engineers totaled 178.5 points. In addition, the Engineers also sent a pair of athletes to the Sam Howell Invitational in New Jersey on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- At the Sam Howell Invitational, sophomore Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) placed fourth in the 10K in a time of 30:07.93, which ranks him third in the country and is the third-fastest time in MIT history as he was the fastest non-senior in the race. Maloney ran a time of 4:46 over the final mile and closed with a final 400 meters of 68 seconds.

- MIT picked up four individual wins at the meet, led by junior Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in the discus. Bratten finished with a throw of 167 feet, five inches as his throw currently ranks him third in the nation.

- In the pole vault, sophomore Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) finished first with a height of 15 feet, five inches, while freshman Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) was second at 14 feet, 11 inches. Junior Ryan Prinster (Boulder, Colo.) was victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 2.5 inches, followed by junior Jason Villanueva (Hesperia, Calif.) in second at 44 feet, 2.5 inches. Villanueva also finished third in the long jump as he posted a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches. In other field events, freshman Chris Washington (Frisco, Texas) finished second in the high jump at six feet, four inches, while sophomore Jon Fakkema (Blaine, Wash.) placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 146 feet, two inches.

- On the track, sophomore Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:45.70, while junior Ben Freed (Frederick, Md.) was second as he crossed in 9:49.80. Senior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Ill.) finished as the runner-up in both the 100 and 200 meters, posting times of 10.95 and 22.07, respectively. Sophomore Michael Amoako (Teaneck, N.J.) also finished third in the 200 as he ran a time of 22.44 seconds.

- Colin Godwin posted a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters in 4:06.36, while junior David Walter (Middleville, Mich.) was third in the 5,000 meters at 15:25.01. MIT also finished third in the 4x100 relay as the team of Newman, freshman Kenneth Acquah (Tenafly, N.J.), senior Henry Tareque (Ossining, N.Y.) and Amoako ran a time of 44.11 seconds.
