Men's Track and Field Earns New England Division III Outdoor Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: Williamstown, Mass. (Lee Track at the Weston Athletic Complex)

- The Lead: With a total of 123 points, the MIT men's track and field team claimed the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship by a 27-point margin over No. 11 ranked Tufts on Saturday afternoon at Williams. MIT had 21 individuals earn All-New England honors, along with two relays and three individual champions as the Engineers picked up their fifth title in the last six years. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Sophomore Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) led three Engineers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he won the event in a time of 9:18.89. Junior Ben Freed (Frederick, Md.) placed second in the race at 9:21.97, followed by freshman Brian Bates (Corning, N.Y.) in seventh with a time of 9:38.54.

- In the pole vault, sophomore Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) captured the title with a clearance of 15 feet, 1.75 inches as three Engineers placed in the top eight. Freshman Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) was third at 14 feet, eight inches, followed by freshman Raja Rajcic (Lubbock, Texas) in fifth at 14 feet, two inches.

- Senior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Ill.) picked up All-New England honors in the 100 and 200 meters, finishing seventh in the 100 at 10.94 and fourth in the 200 in 21.84 seconds. Graduate student Matthew Deyo (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Dennis Maloney (Dublin, Ohio) also earned their second All-New England accolade of the weekend in the 5,000 meters as Deyo was second in 14:36.11, followed by Maloney in third at 14:37.95.

- The 4x800 team placed fourth in 7:48.77, along with an eighth-place showing by the 4x400 relay at 3:20.92. Other track finishes include junior Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, N.J.) in third in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.94 seconds and senior Colin Godwin (Cary, N.C.) in eighth in the 1,500 with a time of 3:55.52.

- Junior Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned All-New England accolades in both the discus and shot put, finishing third and fifth, respectively. Throwing 155 feet, two inches in the discus, Bratten posted a distance of 48 feet, 3.25 inches in the shot. Freshman Albert Menio (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) was eighth in the discus as well, throwing 136 feet, five inches in his first New England meet. Senior Arinze Okeke (Hawthorne, Calif.) placed fifth in the triple jump, leaping 46 feet, 1.5 inches to also pick up All-New England honors.
