THE BASICS:
- Location: Boston University Track and Tennis Center (Boston, Mass.) and the Gantcher Center (Tufts University - Medford, Mass.)
- The Lead: Over the weekend, the No. 6 ranked MIT men's track and field team competed at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at BU and the Branwen Smith-King Invitational as the team posted six top-20 national marks and a pair of event wins for the Engineers. At Tufts, team scores were kept as MIT finished third out of 14 schools with a total of 85.5 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
John Thomas Terrier Classic
- Junior Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) and junior Dennis Maloney (Dublin, Ohio) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in their heat of the 3,000 meters on Saturday. Gilson crossed in 8:17.03, while Maloney finished in a time of 8:18.44. Currently, Gilson is second in the country and Maloney is fifth overall nationally.
- Also at BU, senior Tre Albritten (Plano, Texas) was 15th overall in the 200 meters with a time of 22.08, which is No. 20 in the nation. Freshman Benton Wilson (Dublin, Ohio) won his heat in the 200 in a time of 22.15, which is just outside of the top 20 in the country.
Branwen Smith-King Invitational
- At Tufts, freshman triple jumper Yorai Shaoul (Raanana, Israel) was the story as he took the event with a distance of 48 feet, 1.75 to sit No. 5 in the country. Senior Jason Villanueva (Hesperia, Calif.) was second at 45 feet, five inches, followed in fourth by senior Ryan Prinster (Boulder, Colo.) at 44 feet, 5.5 inches.
- Junior Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) captured the pole vault and led four Engineers in the top 10 as he cleared 14 feet, 11 inches. Freshman Liam Ackerman (Miami, Fla.) finished in fourth at 14 feet, 5.25 inches, while sophomore Bobby Upton (Wexford, Pa.) and sophomore Raja Rajcic (Lubbock, Texas) tied for fifth at 13 feet, 11.25 inches.
- Sophomore Chris Washington (Frisco, Texas) was second in the high jump at six feet, eight inches which ranks 13th in the country. Freshman Mac Gregg (The Woodlands, Texas) was second in the long jump at 21 feet, 4.25 inches, while junior Jon Fakkema (Blaine, Wash.) was second in the weight throw at 56 feet, 4.5 inches. Fakkema's mark, which was a personal best, ranks 19th in the country.
