- The Lead: On its final day in Clermont, the No. 5 ranked MIT softball team fell to both Luther College and No. 17 Wisconsin-Whitewater to close the trip with a 4-4 record. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Luther:

- The game was scoreless until Luther broke through for five runs in the bottom of the third. The Norse loaded the bases on single and back to back walks and plated their first run with an RBI single to left by Blake Banowetz. An RBI single by Maleah Georgen, a two-run single by Morgan Hogenson and to bases loaded walks accounted for the five Luther runs in the inning.

- A sacrifice fly by Annie See extended Luther's lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth. 

- MIT scored its first runs of the game in the top of the sixth after the Engineers loaded the bases. First-year Julia Chatterjee (Hinsdale, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice, junior Michelle Wist (Cypress, Texas) doubled to right center and classmate Sarah Von Ahn (West Linn, Ore.) was hit by a pitch. First-year Anya Chase (Wells, Maine) was credited with an RBI after she was hit by a pitch, while a groundball to second by first-year Olivia Lucchese (Camarillo, Calif.) allowed Wist to score.

- In the top of the seventh and the score at 6-2 in favor of Luther, Norse starter Samantha Bratland allowed first-year Deborah Torres (Portage, Mich.) to reach first via a walk but got three straight outs to close the ballgame.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Bratland improved to 8-3 for the Norse as she threw seven innings, scattered four hits, allowed two earned runs, walked two and struck out two. MIT starter Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) took the loss (3-2) on 2.1 innings, six hits, five earned runs, three walks and one strikeout.

- Four different Engineers notched hits including Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.), Wist, Von Ahn and Lucchese. Banowetz was the only student-athlete in the game to record more than one hit as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Luther.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Wisconsin-Whitewater:

- MIT scored the first run of the nightcap against the 17th ranked Warhawks in the top of the third inning. Junior Madi Pickett (Santa Barbara, Calif.) began the frame with a double to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Goetz came to the plate with two outs and drove in Pickett on an RBI single to left.

- The score remained 1-0 in favor of MIT until the bottom of the six. With one out in the inning, the Warhawks put two runners on for Nikki Mikosz who lifted the ball over the left field fence to give Whitewater the lead 3-1.

- The Engineers tried to rally in the top of the seventh and scored once on an RBI single up the middle by Goetz, but Whitewater got Sierra Rosenzweig (Anchorage, Alaska) to line out to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Whitewater starter Dani Biesiada picked up her first win of the year as she tossed seven innings, allowed five hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and five strikeouts, while sophomore Colleen Campbell (Snoqualmie, Wash.) took the loss (3-2) for MIT on six innings, five hits, three runs (no earned), one walk and two strike outs.

- At the top of MIT's lineup, Goetz went 2-for-4 with two RBI to account for their Engineers offense tonight, while Mikosz and Rux combined to go 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI for Whitewater.

UP NEXT:

- MIT heads back to Cambridge and will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday, March 29 with a doubleheader at home against Babson College in a rematch of last year's league finals.
