THE BASICS:
- Location: Blake Track (Springfield, Mass.)
- The Lead: On Saturday, the No. 3 ranked MIT men's track and field team captured the program's 19th-straight NEWMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a total of 275 points to defeat WPI by a 92-point margin. Overall, MIT won nine events and had 10 runners-up for 19 All-Conference performers in the meet.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Yorai Shaoul (Raanana, Israel) continued an unbeaten season as he captured both the long jump and triple jump titles with leaps of 24 feet, 1.75 inches and 47 feet, seven inches. First-year George Stultz (Frederick, Md.) was fourth in the triple jump, posting a jump of 43 feet, 11.25 inches.
- Junior Josh Derrick (Winnetka, Ill.) led a sweep of the top four spots in the 10,000 meters in 32:52.55 as the four MIT runners finished within .05 seconds of each other. Senior Josh Rosenkranz (Glencoe, Ill.) was second at 32:52.56 as sophomore Finn Jacobson-Schulte (Lakeville, Minn.) was third in the same time. Junior Steven Goldy (Centennial, Colo.) crossed in fourth at 32:52.61.
- The Engineers took the NEWMAC titles in the high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin as the field group was solid on Saturday. Junior Alec Reduker (Newburyport, Mass.) took the event with a height of six feet, 6.75 inches as junior Chris Washington (Frisco, Texas) and first-year Caleb Harris (Franklin, Tenn.) were second and third with a clearance of six feet, 4.75 inches.
- In the pole vault, sophomore Liam Ackerman (Miami, Fla.) cleared 15 feet, five inches to win with senior Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) in second with the same height. Sophomore Everett Brandyberry (Hill City, Kan.) was fourth overall, clearing 14 feet, 5.25 inches.
- First-year Nathan Basinger (Dalton, Ohio) picked up the shot put championship as he threw 46 feet, 1.5 inches to lead three Engineers. Senior Jon Fakkema (Blaine, Wash.) was second at 44 feet, 10.75 inches and junior Albert Menio (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) placed fourth at 42 feet, 11.75 inches. Fakkema was a tremendous point scorer for MIT as he was also second in the hammer at 166 feet, 10 inches and third in the discus with a throw a 140 feet, one inch.
- Menio picked up the championship in the discus with a distance of 143 feet, two inches and was fourth in the hammer at 149 feet, two inches, while first-year Ryan Nall (Lafayette, Calif.) placed fifth in the hammer with a distance of 148 feet, eight inches. Junior Gabriel Madonna (Tyngsborough, Mass.) earned his first NEWMAC championship in the javelin with a throw of 183 feet, two inches with first-year Cooper Driscoll (Wallingford, Pa.) placing fifth in 165 feet, two inches.
- Senior Aidan Gilson (Florence, Mass.) picked up the NEWMAC championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:26.31. The MIT 4x100 relay team placed second in 43.69 seconds, while Joachim Kennedy (Nashville, Tenn.) was third in the 400-meter hurdles at 57.68 seconds and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.73 seconds.
- Sophomore Benton Wilson (Dublin, Ohio) was second in both the 100 and 200 meters in 10.82 and 22.11 seconds, while senior David Walter (Middleville, Mich.) was second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:39.84.
- Junior Simon Alford (Dublin, Ohio) finished second in the 800 for MIT in 1:57.12, followed by first-year Aiden Foucault Etheridge (Leverett, Mass.) in third at 1:57.73 and first-year Reed Foster (Palo Alto, Calif.) in fifth with a time of 1:57.93.
- In the 1,500 meters, sophomore Dylan Doblar (San Jose, Calif.) crossed in third with a time of 4:13.28 and first-year Andrew Mah (Newton, Mass.) followed in fourth at 4:15.34
