Men's Wraps Up Fall Season at MIT Invite

THE BASICS:
 
- MIT Invitational
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (DuPont Tennis Courts)
 
- The Lead: The MIT men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season by hosting the three-day MIT Invitational. The Engineers were led in the event by first-year Daniel Antov (Austin, Texas) and junior Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) in singles and by the doubles team of graduate student Pablo Ampudia (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Richter Jordaan (Denver, Colo.).
 

A LOOK INSIDE THE A DRAW:
 
- Antov advanced to the Round of 16 with a three-set win over Edred Opie of Amherst. After dropping the first set 3-6, Antov won the next two, 6-4, 6-3. He followed that up with a win in the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jeff Chen of Brandeis and advanced to the semifinals with a three-set win over Harris Foulkes of Amherst. In the semis, the first-year ran into Rishabh Sharda of Tufts and fell in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1.
 
- Shen opened play with a three-set victory over Hunter Levine of Brandeis (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) and followed that with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Micha Elias of Amherst to advance to the quarterfinals. There the junior fell to eventual runner-up Isaac Gorelik of Tufts, 7-5, 6-1.
 
- First-year Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) earned a trip to the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Derin Acaroglu of Tufts but fell to Harris Foulkes of Amherst, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
 
- Sophomore Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Shaw Rhinelander of Amherst in the Round of 32 before falling to Josh Belandres of Tufts in a tough three-set match, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.
 

A LOOK INSIDE THE B DRAW:
 
- First-year Benjamin Ebanks (New York City, N.Y.) advanced to the quarters with a bye, but suffered a tough loss in a three-set match to Mauricio Gutierrez, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
 

A LOOK INSIDE THE DOUBLES DRAW:

- The team of Ampudia and Jordaan advanced to the quarters with a default win and took the quarterfinal match 8-4 over Hunter Levine and Chen Liang of Brandeis. In the semifinals, the duo fell to runners-up Isaac Gorelik and Paris Pentousis of Tufts, 8-7.
 
- Juniors Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) and Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) earned a tough 8-7 victory over Edred Opie and Micha Elias of Amherst in the Round of 16 and earned a spot in the semifinals with an 8-3 win over the Tufts' team of Derin Acaroglu and Josh Belandres. The duo fell in the semis to eventual champions Jeff Chen and Adam Tzeng of Brandeis, 8-4.
 
- Antov and first-year Carl-Herman Grant (Oslo, Norway) earned a Round of 16 win over Vuk Vuksanovic and Corey Marley of Tufts, 8-7, before falling in the quarterfinals to the Brandeis team of Chen and Tzeng 8-4.
 
 
UP NEXT:

- This wraps up the fall season for the Engineers as MIT will return to the courts on Wednesday, February 23 as they will host Bentley University at 4:00 p.m. to get the spring schedule started.
