The Lead: Behind 13 event victories the MIT women's swimming & diving team captured victories over WPI and Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at the Zesiger Center Pool.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
200-Yard Medley Relay
- MIT grabbed the top two spots in the event.
- The 'A' relay team of first-year Katearina Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wisc.), junior Edenna Chen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Olivia McGrath (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Lindsey Bjornstad (Mequon, Wisc.) took first with a time of 1:46.16, just besting the time of 1:46.42 by the team of first-year Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.), graduate student Sara Nicholas (Wilmette, Ill.), first-year Kaleigh Spears (Fairhope, Ala.) and sophomore Melody Wen (Cary, N.C.).
1,000-Yard Freestyle
- First-year Jolie Kim (Englewood, Colo.) won the event for the Engineers finishing the event in 10:46.19.
200-Yard Freestyle
- The Engineers had the first and third finishers in the event with first-year Miri Griffin (Centennial, Colo.) taking home first with a time of 1:55 followed by Chen in third with a mark of 1:59.38.
100-Yard Backstroke
- First-year Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.) captured first-overall in the event with a time of 57.25 while Augustyn came in just behind in second with a mark of 58.01.
100-Yard Breaststroke
- Senior Danielle Fang (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) captured third in the event, finishing with a mark of 1:09.63.
200-Yard Butterfly
- The Engineers swept the top three spots, led by first-year Sarah Lu (Katy, Texas) who finished the event in 2:09.31.
- Sophomore Sydney Chun (Chandler, Ariz.) came in second with a time of 2:09.58 followed by sophomore Katie Sapozhnikov (Ambler, Pa.) with a mark of 2:14.77.
50-Yard Freestyle
- Wen earned a second-place finish for MIT as she touched the wall with a time of 24.18.
1-Meter Diving
- MIT swept the podium with first-year Rachel Loh (Arcadia, Calif.) leading the way in first with a score of 241.42 followed closely by junior Megha Maran (Elk Grove, Calif.) in second with a score of 241.34. First-year Ava Dijstelbloem (Rose Valley, Pa.) captured third with a score of 238.42.
100-Yard Freestyle
- Sophomore Helen Sun (Solon, Ohio) finished in third with a time of 53.94.
200-Yard Backstroke
- The top-three spots in the event were by the Engineers with Augustyn taking first with a time of 2:04.25.
- Yang finished in second with a time of 2:08.02 while sophomore Katherine Kostecki (St. Louis, Mo.) claimed third clocking in at 2:10.83.
200-Yard Breaststroke
- E. Chen registered an NCAA 'B Cut' and bested the 2019 invited time, winning the event with a time of 2:20.59 to win the event.
- Nicholas finished in third with a time of 2:29.23.
500-Yard Freestyle
- The Engineers swept the top-three spots in the event as Kim claimed another victory with her first-place time of 5:18.80.
- First-year Chloe Swanson (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished second with a time of 5:27.98 while Sapozhnikov finished in third with a time of 5:28.13.
100-Yard Butterfly
- Chun took home the top spot with a time of 58.81 followed by McGrath in second with a time of 1:00.02.
3-Meter Diving
- Loh registered a regional score with her score of 290.85 to win the event.
- Junior Katelin Du (Scarsdale, N.Y.) finished in second with a score of 244.87 followed by Maran in third with a score of 240.30.
200-Yard IM
- The top three spots all belonged to MIT with Spears coming in first with a time of 2:11.98 followed by Griffin (2:12.60) and junior Angelina Zhang (New York, N.Y.) in third with a time of 2:15.31.
400-Yard Freestyle Relay
- The MIT 'A' team of E.Chen, Wen Sun and Bjornstad took first with a time of 3:34.84 while Augustyn, McGrath, Yang and Griffin finished in second with a time of 3:36.91.
