Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: MIT captured the first three points and then went on a 9-0 run to build a 12-2 advantage. The Engineers maintained the comfortable cushion, eventually winning the set, 25-13, on a kill by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.).
Â
-
Set 2: Smith slowly built a 10-5 lead and held a small margin for most of the set. Trailing 20-15, back-to-back kills from sophomore
Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) along with a trio of miscues tied the frame. After trading serving errors, a block by Edwards and junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) gave MIT a 22-21 edge. An exchange of points followed until a kill and a block put the Pioneers back in front, resulting in set point (24-23). A kill from Edwards and then a block by Rozario produced the third lead change of the set; however, a kill by the hosts kicked off another stretch of back-and-forth scoring which knotted the set at 26. The Engineers quickly capitalized on another Edwards kill and a Smith hitting error to clinch the come-from-behind win.
Â
-
Set 3: MIT scored the first four points and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-12 victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) notched three blocks, two aces, and a kill in one set.
Â
