Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: The early stages were closely played as there were five ties and five lead changes. Trailing 11-10, a kill by sophomore
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) kicked off a 7-0 run that put MIT ahead for good. Wheaton replied with a 6-2 spurt but a kill by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) along with an ace from sophomore
Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) increased the Engineers' cushion to 21-17. A serving error kept the Lyons within striking distance, however, a kill from junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) and an ace by first-year
Daphne Gavros (Tiburon, Calif.) moved the score to 23-19. Wheaton capitalized on a kill and a block, but kills by Rozario and first-year
Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) thwarted the late rally.
Â
-
Set 2: MIT claimed the first seven points before going on to record a 25-5 victory. During the frame, the Engineers hit .586 as it produced 17 kills on 29 errorless attempts.
Â
-
Set 3: Holding a 13-10 lead, a pair of errors by the Lyons helped MIT pull away as it eventually reached match point at 24-16 on a kill by Rozario. An error, two kills, and an ace extended the frame for Wheaton, however, another kill from Rozario clinched the 25-20 win.
