The Lead: The No. 8 MIT women's swimming and diving team broke the NEWMAC record in the 800-Freestyle Relay on opening night action of the 2022 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday night at the Zesiger Center Pool. The Engineers are first overall followed by Wheaton in second with 60 points and WPI in third with 52 points.

- The MIT 'A' team of senior
Laura Rosado (New Haven, Conn.), senior
Lindsey Bjornstad (Mequon, Wisc.), first-year
Miri Griffin (Centennial, Colo.) and first-year
Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wisc.) set a NEWMAC record with a first-place time of 7:30.80. The time was almost eight seconds faster than second-place finisher Wheaton. The team broke the previous NEWMAC record of 7:31.04 which MIT set in 2020.

- Bjornstad and Rosado notch their second championship as members of the 800-free team.

- The time is also an NCAA 'B' cut and is faster than the 2019 invited time of 7:35.32. Â

- The Engineers return to the pool tomorrow morning for day two of the 2022 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will start at 6 p.m. Scheduled events for tomorrow include the 200-free relay, the 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free, 1-meter diving, and the 400-medley relay.
