The Lead: The No. 8 MIT women's swimming and diving team notched six NCAA 'B' cuts and set numerous NEWMAC and school records during day three of competition at the 2022 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Engineers hold a 279.5-point advantage over second-place Wheaton with Springfield rounding out the top-three with 431 points during the competition.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
400-IM
- First-year
Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.) swam an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:23.55 in the 400-Yard IM in her victory in the event. The time is faster than the 2019 invited time of 4:28.65 and currently ranks eighth in Division III and is a new school record.
- Junior
Angelina Zhang (New York, N.Y.) took third in the event with a time of 4:31.89, just fractions of a second behind second-place finisher
Emily Edds of Wheaton who finished in 4:31.83.
100-Fly
- Senior
Olivia McGrath (Chevy Chase, Md.) finished second in 55.79 for an NCAA 'B' cut mark while sophomore
Sydney Chun (Chandler, Ariz.) also earned a 'B' Cut with a time of 56.05 to finish third. Both times are also faster than the 2019 invited time.
- Senior
Laura Rosado (New Haven, Conn.) finished fifth as she touched the wall in 56.72 and first-year
Sarah Lu (Katy, Texas) and sophomore
Helen Sun (Solon, Ohio) clocked in ninth with the identical time of 58.58.
200-Free
- First-year
Miri Griffin (Centennial, Colo.) earned a second-place finish with a time of 1:52.60 and first-year
Stella Shipps (Cedar Park, Texas) finished in eighth with a mark of 1:56.11.
100-Breast
- Junior
Edenna Chen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned an NCAA 'A' cut with a school and NEWMAC record time of 1:00.43. Her time is now also the fastest in Division III this season.
- Graduate student
Sara Nicholas (Wilmette, Ill.) also earned an NCAA 'B' cut with her fourth-place time of 1:04.45.
- Senior
Danielle Fang (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) took sixth with a time of 1:05.75.
100-Back
- Rosado took home second in the event with a mark of 56.87 followed by first-year
Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.) in third with a time of 57.71.
- Sophomore
Melody Wen (Cary, N.C.) finished in eighth with a time of 58.75.
200-Medley Relay
- The MIT 'A' team of Augustyn, Chen, McGrath, and Wen took the top spot with a NEWMAC Open record time of 1:41.01. The time is now the third-fastest in DIII and sets a new school record. The team bested the 2019 invited time of 1:44.45.
UP NEXT:
- The Engineers are back in the pool tomorrow for the final day of competition at the 2022 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The scheduled events for the day are the 1650 free, 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, 3-meter diving, and the 400-free relay.
