Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 11 MIT Sweeps Gordon on Opening Day of Gordon Tournament

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 11 MIT 3, Gordon College 0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-17)

- Records: No. 11 MIT (1-0), Gordon (0-1)

- Location: Wenham, Mass. (Bennett Center)

- The Lead: The nationally-ranked No. 11 MIT women's volleyball team opened its season by sweeping host Gordon College, 25-12, 25-8, 25-17, at the Gordon Tournament on Friday night. Sophomore Adrina Tang (Monte Sereno, Calif.) powered the Engineers with 30 assists, eight digs, three aces, and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: MIT won the first five points of the match, but Gordon narrowed the gap to 7-5. A kill by senior Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) sparked another five-point burst which fueled a 13-3 run. The remainder of the set was balanced as the Engineers eventually won, 25-12.

- Set 2: After a back-and-forth start, MIT inched out to a 6-2 lead courtesy of a block by first-year Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Tang. A pair of kills cut the Fighting Scots' deficit in half; however, this was as close as it would get as the Engineers captured the set, 25-8.

- Set 3: MIT gradually built a 9-4 edge but Gordon came within two points on three occasions, the last at 11-9. Kills by junior Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) and sophomore Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) along with two errors created some breathing room before the Engineers went up 16-11 courtesy of Tang's ace. An exchange of points followed, moving the score to 18-14. MIT replied with a kill from Gibbs, kicking off a 7-3 match-ending run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Gragg paced the Engineers' balanced attack with a match-high nine kills while hitting .500 as Edwards posted eight kills and a .375 hitting percentage

- Sophomore Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) totaled seven digs and three aces whiles senior Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led all players with five blocks. Senior Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.) bolstered the defense with six digs.

UP NEXT:

- MIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 with two more matches to close out the Gordon Tournament. The Engineers will take on Oglethorpe University at 11:00 a.m. and then Lasell University at 3:00 p.m.
