The Lead: A pair of goals in the third and fourth quarters propelled No. 20 MIT to a 4-1 come-from-behind victory over Roger Williams University in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday night. Graduate students
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) and
Liberty Ladd (Cornelia, Ga.) along with junior
Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) each had multi-point games for the Engineers while
Kelly Doherty recorded the lone tally for the Hawks.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Roger Williams controlled the action in the first quarter as it generated advantages in shots (9-4), shots on goal (6-2), and penalty corners (6-1). The Hawks eventually got on the board when Doherty collected the rebound of her saved shot and tapped it into the cage from the near post with 2:52 left in the frame.
Â
- The second stanza was slightly more balanced as the visitors had a 4-2 edge in shots (2-1 on goal) and a 4-1 margin in penalty corners, but the score remained unchanged.
Â
- MIT ended the shutout just 2:32 into the third quarter. From just outside the arc, Forester batted down a lofted ball which bounced to Oppenheim. She then passed it to Ladd on the far side, drawing goalie
Hannah Brazil off her line, who then fed it to Forester at the near post where she found herself with an open net. The Engineers captured the lead in the 42
nd minute when a quick pass by Forester made its way through a crowd to Oppenheim at the far post.
Â
- Despite being down a player, MIT carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as it increased its margin to 3-1 after 49 seconds elapsed. First year
Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) fired a pass from the endline into the arc. After getting batted around, Forester corralled the ball and struck it to the middle of the cage. The Engineers capped the scoring in the 55
th minute when a long pass along the endline from Ladd was redirected by Oppenheim at the far post.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- First year
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) collected seven saves while Brazil finished with nine for Roger Williams.
Â
- MIT ended the night with the upper hand in shots (18-14) and shots on goal (13-8) as it outshot the Hawks, 12-1 (10-0 on goal), in the second half. Roger Williams led the way in penalty corners (10-8).
