Engebretson, Guobadia Shine in Men’s Track and Field Season Opener Meets

THE BASICS:
 
- Locations: BU Track and Tennis Center (Boston, Mass.) and The TRACK at New Balance (Boston, Mass.)
 
- The Lead: Junior Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and graduate student Mozi Guobadia (Katy, Texas) picked up individual wins with personal-best performances to lead the MIT men's track and field team on Saturday at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danvile Season Opener and the Suffolk Relays.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE SUFFOLK RELAYS:
 
- Engebretson won the weight throw at the Suffolk Relays with a career-best mark of 60 feet, one inch. He also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 1.75 inches that would have made the NCAA acceptance list last season. Nationally, Engebretson ranks second in the weight throw and fourth in the shot put.
 
- Sophomore Sawyer Garrett (Sherborn, Mass.) and senior Trey Gurga (San Diego, Calif.) tied for third in the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 9.25 inches.
 
- Sophomore Enoch Ellis (Garland, Texas) finished fourth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.28, putting him at ninth in the Division III rankings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE BU SEASON OPENER:
 
- Guobadia won the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 22.26, which currently ranks third in Division III.
 
- First year Anthony Meng (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed second in the high jump with a mark of six feet, six inches in his collegiate debut. The performance ranks fourth in the nation.
 
- Sophomore Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco Calif.) was the runner up in the triple jump with a jump of 45 feet, eight inches, which ranks eighth nationally.
 
- Sophomore Nathan Shapiro (Glenview, Ill.) placed third in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, seven inches. 
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT will wrap up its first-semester schedule hosting the Cardinal and Gray Alumni Meet on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11:00 a.m.
