THE BASICS:
- Locations: BU Track and Tennis Center (Boston, Mass.) and The TRACK at New Balance (Boston, Mass.)
- The Lead: Junior
Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) set a program record in the weight throw to lead the MIT women's indoor track and field team on Saturday at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danvile Season Opener and the Suffolk Relays.
HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE SUFFOLK RELAYS:
- Boykin was the runner-up in the weight throw at the Suffolk Relays with an Institute-record mark of 62 feet, .5 inches. Her throw, which currently ranks first in Division III, would have been the second-best mark going into last year's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Boykin also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, seven inches, which is second in the country and would have also been a qualifying performance for nationals last season.
- Junior
Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) also had impressive performances with third and fourth place finishes in the shot put and weight throw, respectively. Ball posted a 41-foot 8-inch throw in the shot put and had a 50-foot .5-inch mark in the weight throw.
- Sophomore
Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) placed second overall and was the first collegiate athlete with an 11.5-foot mark in the pole vault. She currently ranks fifth in Division III.
HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE BU SEASON OPENER:
- Junior
Paige Cooksey (Ormond Beach, Fla.) placed fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.65, resulting in the third-best performance in the nation.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of junior
Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.), senior
Madeline Hon (Manhasset, N.Y.), sophomore
Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) and Cooksey placed second with a time of 3:56.78, which currently leads Division III.
- In 3,000 meters, sophomore
Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and graduate student
Kirsi Rajagopal (Harrison, N.Y.) rank second (9:52.30) and ninth (10:13.52), respectively, in the country.
