Newport, R.I.
(June 26) - Junior
Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) of the MIT men's tennis team has been named the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Rhode Island College Tennis Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season. Kahler earned the Andy Chase Award as the state's top men's college player.
Â
The Andy Chase Award has been presented since 2015. A native of Cumberland, Chase was the US National 16 & Under Hardcourt Singles Champion and a two-time national junior doubles champion. He won two RIILS state singles championships and team championship for Cumberland. He went on to play at Stanford University, where he was a teammate of John McEnroe. The Cardinal won three NCAA Division I team championships during his four years in Palo Alto, California.
Â
Kahler was named the NEWMAC Player of the Year as he posted a 12-9 overall record and a 5-0 conference record. He dropped just one set in NEWMAC singles play. Kahler earned a straight-set win in the NEWMAC Championship over No. 19 Brooks Green to help the Engineers seal their 23rd title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament where MIT defeated No. 21 Swarthmore in the second round.
Â
Off the court, Kahler is majoring in electrical engineering and computer science and is an ITA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference member. He was also named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Third Team Academic All-American.
Â
The awards go to the top male and female college players from Rhode Island, who do not necessarily play for an in-state school. They will be presented at the INFOSYS Hall of Fame Open on Monday, July 17.Â
