Sailing Caps Weekend With Fifth Place Finish at Captain Hurst; 12th at Women's ACC Finals

The MIT sailing team capped a full weekend of racing which was highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Captain Hurst Bowl. In addition, the Engineers placed 12th at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Final and ninth at the Savin Hill Invite.

WOMEN'S ACC CHAMPIONSHIP | Annapolis, Md. | 12th 18
  • MIT placed 12th overall at the championship with a total of 338 points.
  • Senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished 12th with 167 points in the 'A Division'. They finished with seven top-10 places highlighted by a second and third-place finish during the two-day event.
  • In the 'B Division', senior Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), senior Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), and senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) finished in 13th with 171 points. They finished in the top-10 ten times throughout 16 races.
CAPTAIN HURST BOWL | Hanover, NH | 5th of 15
  • The Engineers took fifth with 144 total points.
  • In the 'A Division' the team of sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.), junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.), and senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished in sixth with 85 points. They earned six top-five finishes and concluded the weekend with a second and fourth-place finish.
  • Graduate student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.), senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) finished in fourth in the 'B Division' with 59 points. They won the head-to-head tiebreaker with Stanford. The Engineers earned five top-three finishes with two wins.
SAVIN HILL INVITE | Chestnut Hill, Mass. | 9th of 15
  • MIT totaled 84 points to earn a top-10 finish at the Savin Hill Invite.
  • In the 'A Division' first year Will Kulas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and junior Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.) finished in 10th with 46 points.
  • First years Karya Basaraner (Izmir, Turkey) and Tamsin Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) finished in sixth in the 'B Division' with 38 points.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT is back in the water next weekend where the Engineers will compete at the Atlantic Coast Tournament in New London, Conn., and at the Yale Women's Trophy in New Haven, Conn. They will also host the Oberg Trophy. All events will run from Saturday, October 19-Sunday October 20.
