Sailing Grabs Sixth at Stu Nelson; 10th at Open ACC

The MIT sailing team earned two top-10 finishes over the weekend as they captured a 10th-place finish at the Open ACC Round 1B and a sixth-place finish at the Stu Nelson Trophy.

OPEN ACC ROUND 1B | St. Mary's City, Md. | 10th of 18

MIT finished just outside the top-nine as the Engineers finished with 239 points. Miami captured ninth with 207 points to earn a bid to the Open ACC Championships.
Graduate student Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Ellie Pinto (Chicago, Ill.) led the 'A Division' boat to an eighth-place finish with 107 points. They captured eight top-10 finishes to hold off the Miami boat which finished tenth with 120 points.
In the 'B Division' senior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), sophomore Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.), senior Yitian Zhu (Katy, Texas), and senior Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) finished in 11th with 132 points. They grabbed seven top-10 finishes, capped by a fourth place finish to end the regatta.

The Engineers took sixth with 201 points.
In the 'A' Division, senior Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and sophomore Elliott Chalcraft (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished in sixth with 64 points. They earned five top-five finishes in 10 races.
Junior Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Katherine Jankowski (Hillsborough, Calif.) finished eighth in the 'B Division' with 71 points. They grabbed three top-five finishes in 10 races.
The Engineers finished in fifth in the 'C Division' with 66 points. First year Sophia Woodbury (Sarasota, Fla.) and senior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) steered the team to five top-five finishes, including two second-place finishes.

UP NEXT:

The Engineers will compete at the two-day Women's ACC Championship in Annapolis, Md. They will also compete at the Savin Hill Invite on Saturday, October 12.
