The Lead: For the fifth season in a row and the 21
st time in program history, the MIT men's track and field team claimed the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday. The Engineers tallied 154 points, finishing comfortably ahead of Tufts University (106.5) and Amherst College (83). MIT won seven events, posted seven runner-up finishes, and broke a meet record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
800 Meters
- Sophomore Charlie Glass (Austin, Texas) won the 800m for the second year in a row as he posted a time of 1:51.24 which is a PR and ranks 15th in the country. In addition, he broke the meet record for the second straight season.
- Junior Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) was the runner up with a PR of 1:52.01 while junior Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.) finished third in 1:52.26.
60m Hurdles
- MIT claimed the top two spots as graduate student Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) won in 8.01 seconds, edging out junior Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) who finished in 8.15 seconds.
- This was Wei's third victory in the event and his time ranks eighth in Division III this season.
60m Dash
- Sophomore Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) claimed first place for the second year in a row with a time of 6.85 as sophomore Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif.) was fifth in 6.93 seconds.
High Jump
- First-year Anthony Meng (Scottsdale, Ariz.) captured first place with a height of 2.08m (6' 9.75") on his second attempt. The performance equaled his PR and ranks third in the country.
3,000 Meters
- Graduate student Sam Acquaviva (Newburyport, Mass.) placed first in 8:10.36, which stands 18th in the nation.
- Graduate student Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) crossed the finish line next in 8:14.66, resulting in a PR.
- Junior Pablo Arroyo (Richardson, Texas) secured fifth place with a time of 8:19.42.
Weight Throw
- Junior Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the weight throw for the first time in his career with a mark of 17.85m (58' 6").
Mile
- Senior Henry Hardart (Annapolis, Md.) was the runner up in the mile with a time of 4:11.34.
- First-year Jaxon Miller (Goshen, Ind.) and sophomore Jake Cobb (West Deptford, N.J.) finished sixth and seventh in 4:15.86 and 4:16.66, respectively.
400 Meters
- Junior Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.) placed second in 48.57, followed by sophomore Jack DeBaugh (Severna Park, Md.) in sixth place (49.23) and sophomore Conrad Casebolt (Aurora, Colo.) in eighth (49.92).
Triple Jump
- Sophomore Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) was the runner up with a distance of 14.06m (46' 1.5").
