The Lead: For the fifth time in program history and the first since 2017, the MIT women's track and field claimed first place at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday. The Engineers amassed 130.33 points, finishing comfortably ahead of Williams College (96) and Amherst College (95). MIT won five events and produced six runner-up performances.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
Weight Throw
- Junior Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) won the event for the second year in a row with a distance of 18.61m (61' 8") on her first attempt.
- Junior Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) was the runner up with a throw of 16.38m (53' 9").
- Sophomore Lilia Ould-Hammou (Metuchen, N.J.) finished sixth with a PR of 15.08m (49' 5.75').
Shot Put
- Boykin's first throw of 14.73m (48' 4") set the standard for the competition, however, her final attempt landed at 15.11m (49' 7") and resulted in her second straight shot put title and a PR. The mark also ranks first in the nation.
- Ball's final attempt reached 12.44m (40' 9.75"), which moved her up from seventh place to fifth.
Triple Jump
- Sophomore Nony Otu Ugwu (Katy, Texas) won the triple jump for the first time in her career with a leap of 11.81m (38' 9"), resulting in a new PR.
Pole Vault
- Sophomore Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) captured her first pole vault title at a height of 3.83m (12' 6.75") as she cleared the bar on her first attempt. The performance currently ranks eighth in Division III and is a new PR.
- Sophomore Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) finished fourth at 3.78m (12' 4.75").
800m
- Senior Julia Howarth (Barrington, R.I.) claimed the 800m crown with a time of 2:14.78 while sophomore Erin Hovendon (Hendersonville, N.C.) was seventh in 2:19.49.
4x400 Relay
- MIT was the runner-up with a time of 3:50.04. Junior Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.), senior Paige Cooksey (Ormond Beach, Fla.), Howarth, and junior Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) set the second-fastest time in meet history.
- Williams College broke the meet record as it edged out the Engineers for first place by .6 seconds.
Mile
- Sophomore Katherine Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) finished second as she logged a time of 4:55.21, which is a PR and currently ranks 16th in the country.
- Sophomore Rujuta Sane (Chandler, Ariz.) finished sixth in 5:02.91, narrowly edging out junior Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) who was seventh (5:03.50).
600m
- Dias set a new PR with a time of 1:37.46 to finish second, just .19 seconds out of the top spot.
- Sophomore Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) claimed seventh place as she crossed the finish line in 1:39.64 for a new PR.
3000m
- Sophomore Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) was the runner up in 9:50.07 while first-year Olivia Girand (New York, N.Y.) placed fifth (10.02.99).
4x800 Relay
- Sane, Crow, Fernandez, and Sanderson collaborated for a second-place finish with a time of 9:17.16.
400m
- Cooksey crossed the finish line in 57.12 to finish fourth.
High Jump
- Sophomore Katie Kempff (St. Charles, Ill.) cleared 1.61m (5' 3.25") on her last attempt to rank seventh.
- Senior Tolu Akinbo (Naperville, Ill.) claimed the next spot as she reached a height of 1.56m (5' 1.25").
