The Lead: A trio of victories helped the MIT men's track and field team build a comfortable lead during the opening day of the NEWMAC Championship on Friday. The Engineers currently rank first with 77 points, followed by WPI (38.5), Babson College (38), host Springfield College (24), the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (16.5), and Wheaton College (one).
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS – TOP TWO FINISHERS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS:
- First-year
Jonah Goldstein (Pasadena, Calif.) claimed the javelin title with a distance of 60.09m (197' 1") while sophomore
Jackson Bliey (Talleyville, Del.) was eighth (48.90m / 160' 5").
- Graduate student
Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) won the long jump with a leap of 7.10m (23' 3.5"), which occurred during his final attempt. Sophomore
Nathan Shapiro (Glenview, Ill.) finished fourth (6.68m / 21' 11") as sophomore
Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) ranked sixth (6.48m / 21' 3.25").
- In the hammer throw, junior
Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) came away with the victory as his first throw of 54.38m (178' 5") resulted in the conference crown. First-year
Connor Kalvar (Floyd's Knobs, Ind.) was the runner with a distance of 48.42m (158' 10") while first-year
Justin Buonato (Horsham, Pa.) placed fifth (41.85m / 137' 3").
- The Engineers captured second, fourth, fifth, and seventh place in the 10,000m. Graduate student
Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) led the way with a time of 31:30.95, followed by first-year
Yichen Sun (Chapel Hill, N.C.) in 31:49.97, graduate student
Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) in 32:14.61, and junior
Carlos Villa (Wadsworth, Ill.) in 33:05.36.
- Sophomore
Sawyer Garrett (Sherborn, Mass.) was fourth in the pole vault as he cleared 4.25m (13' 11.25") while senior
Mark Mosser (Webster, Minn.) finished in seventh place at a height of 3.80m (12' 5.5
").
- MIT claimed the top two spots in the 110m hurdles prelims, resulting in qualification for the final. Junior
Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) led the field with a time of 14.36 seconds, edging out Wei who crossed the finish line in 14.62 seconds.
- Graduate student
Mozi Guobadia (Baton Rouge, La.) and senior
Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa) both advanced to the finals of the 100m as they finished sixth (11.022 seconds) and seventh (11.024 seconds) in the prelims.
