The Lead: The MIT men's track and field team won nine events and generated five nationally ranked performances at the Amherst Spring Fling on Sunday.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
Shot Put
- Junior
Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won shot put with a distance of 15.89m (52' 1.75").
3000m Steeplechase
- Sophomore
Jake Cobb (West Deptford, N.J.) won the event by 18 seconds as he crossed the finish line in 9:24.26 while first-year
Hunter Miller (Greencastle, Ind.) was eighth (10:14.38).
4x100 Relay
- Comprised of graduate student
Mozi Guobadia (Baton Rouge, La.), sophomore
Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif.), senior
Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa), and sophomore
Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.), MIT finished first with a time of 41.35 which ranks seventh in Division III this season.
Javelin
- First-year
Jonah Goldstein (Pasadena, Calif.) claimed the victory with a distance of 50.06m (164' 3").
110m Hurdles
- Sophomore
Enoch Ellis (Garland, Texas) captured first place with a time of 14.77.
High Jump
- First-year
Anthony Meng (Scottsdale, Ariz.) cleared 2.09m (6' 10.25") to win the event while sophomore
Jackson Bliey (Talleyville, Del.) was the runner up at 2.06m (6' 9").
- Meng currently ranks second in the nation while Biley is fourth.
800m
- The Engineers placed five student-athletes in the top eight. Junior
Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.) finished first with a time of 1:51.87, followed by junior
Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) in second place (1:52.09), first-year
David Whitaker (Northville, Mich.) in fourth with a PR of 1:53.34, sophomore
Charlie Glass (Austin, Texas) in sixth (1:54.09), and junior
Sam Coutts (Pacific Grove, Calif.) in eighth place with a PR of 1:54.94.
- Hassan's time ranks seventh in the country while Opsahl's is 11
th.
Triple Jump
- Graduate student
Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) won the triple jump with a leap of 14.17m (46' 6") while sophomore
Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) was third with a distance of 13.60m (44' 7.50").
- Wei's performance ranks 13
th in Division III this season.
Discus
- Engebretson claimed the victory with a mark of 48.79m (160' 1"), which currently ranks 17
th in the nation.
100m
- Haertel was the runner up with a time of 10.79 as Clement and Guobadia finished fourth (10.99) and fifth (11.01), respectively.
Hammer Throw
- Engebretson placed second with a distance of 54.90m (180' 1") while first-year
Connor Kalvar (Floyd's Knobs, Ind.) was sixth (49.97m / 163' 11").
Long Jump
- Huckleberry finished second with a PR of 6.68m (21' 11").
4x400 Relay
- Comprised of first-year
Davis Lee (Mountain Brook, Ala.), first-year
Connor Sterling (New Milford, Conn.), sophomore
Dylan Bradford (Highland, Md.), and Whitaker, MIT claimed second place with a time of 3:24.54.
200m
- Haertel, senior
Will Liu (San Marino, Calif.), and sophomore
Kristian Praizner (Folsom, Pa.) all set personal records. Haertel led the way with a third-place finish in 21.95, followed by Liu in sixth (22.19) and Praizner in seventh (22.21).
Pole Vault
- Sophomore
Sawyer Garrett (Sherborn, Mass.) tied for third place with a height of 4.30m (14' 1.25") while senior
Trey Gurga (San Diego, Calif.) tied for fifth place at 4.15m (13' 7.25").
