BOSTON, Mass. – The quartet of junior
Shreya Kalyan (Troy, Mich.), senior
Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.), senior
Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.) and junior
Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) set an NCAA indoor record in the sprint medley relay as the MIT women's track and field team returned to action on Saturday at the Suffolk Relays at The TRACK at New Balance.
THE BASICS:
HOW IT HAPPENED – TRACK EVENTS:
- SMR: MIT won the event with a time of 4:11.44, more than 13 seconds ahead of Connecticut College who took second in 4:24.77.
- 500m Run: Montgomery took second in the event with a time of 1:16.44, while Dias finished third in 1:16.76.
HOW IT HAPPENED – FIELD EVENTS:
- Shot Put: Senior Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) registered a first-place finish with a mark of 14.50m (47'7") and classmate Emily Ball placed fifth at 12.71m (41' 8 1/2").
- Weight Throw: Boykin added a second-place finish as she posted a mark of 18.56m (60' 10 3/4") and led four MIT competitors in the event.
- Pole Vault: Junior Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) matched her personal indoor best and finished tied for second at 3.90m (12' 9 1/2"). Fellow junior Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) placed fifth with a mark of 3.60m (11' 9 3/4") and first year Elise Doyle (Danville, Calif.) was sixth at 3.45m (11' 3 3/4").
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The winning time in the sprint medley relay eclipsed the previous NCAA record of 4:12.59 that had been set by Monmouth (Ill.) on Feb. 25, 2017.
- Dias and Montgomery's respective times in the 500 meters represent the third and fourth-best times in Engineers' program history.
- Surace's height of 3.90m matches her personal best and is a national qualifying mark.

- The Engineers will return to action on Saturday, January 18 for the URI Invitational that will get underway at 10:00 AM.
