No. 1 Women’s Track & Field Hosts Gordon Kelly Invitational; Sets DMR Record at Valentine Invitational

CAMBRIDGE/BOSTON/MEDFORD, Mass. — The No. 1 nationally ranked MIT women's track & field team hosted the Gordon Kelly Invitational on Saturday at the Johnson Athletic Center, earning victories in the high jump, pole vault triple jump, shot put and weight throw, while away from campus, the Engineers' distance medley relay team of seniors Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) and juniors Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.), and Kate Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded the second fastest Division III time of the year, and one of the top marks in Division III history, running a program indoor record of 11:34.00 at Boston University's Valentine Invitational.

In addition to the Gordon Kelly Invitational and action at the BU Track & Tennis Center, MIT also had runners competing on Saturday at the Tufts Stampede at the Gnatcher Center in Medford.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED - Gordon Kelly Invitational:

  • 60m: Sophomore JoJo Miller (Marietta, Ga.) was second with a personal record of 8:06. First year Shannon Cordle (Marysville, Ohio) took sixth in 8.26.
  • 200m: First year Maeve Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas) took third in 27.32.
  • High Jump: Junior Katie Kempff (St. Charles, Ill.) won the event, clearing 1.61m.
  • Pole Vault: Junior Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) won the event, clearing a season best 3.83m.
  • Long Jump: Cordle was MIT's top finisher, taking eighth with a mark of 4.60m.
  • Triple Jump: Junior Nony Ould Ugwu (Katy, Texas) won the event with a mark of 11.65m.
  • Shot Put: Senior Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) won the event with a season best mark of 13.58m. Sophomore Lily Siegelman (Newton, Mass.) also finished in the top ten with a mark of 10.72m. 
  • Weight Throw: Senoor Alexis Boykin (Clifton, Ohio) won the event with a mark of 20.07m. Sophomore Macy Brennan (Westlake, Ohio) and junior Lilia Ould-Hammou (Metuchen, N.J.) each finished in the top ten with marks of 14.45m and 13,98m, respectively. Brennan's mark was a PR.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Tufts Stampede:

  • Mile: Grad student Archana Mohandas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was ninth in 5:23.78. First year Sarah Hopp (Stevens Point, Wis.) added a time of 5:30.40 and junior Stella Gassman (Larchmont, N.Y.) was 24th in 6:08.39. 

HOW IT HAPPENED - Valentine Invitational:

  • 400m: Senior Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.) took third in 56.88.
  • Mile: Sophomore Megan Diulus (Akron, Ohio) was 216th in 5:11.29.
  • 3000m: Junior Rujuta Sane (Chandler, Ariz.) 138th in 9:41.35, senior Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) was 150th in 9:44.94, and first year Ava Hartman (New Orleans, La.) was 247th in 10:26.73.
  • 5000m: Junior Kate Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) took 65th in 16:27.28, with sophomore Liv Girard (New York, N.Y. ) finishing 93rd in 16:48.46. 
  • Distance Medley Relay: Crow, Marina Miller,  Montgomery, and Sanderson finished second in 11:34.00.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Howard is now sixth in Division III and third in the region in the pole vault thanks to her score on Saturday.
  • Ball moved up to 15 on the DIII national list and second in the region in the shot put.
  • Brennan is 13th in the region in the weight throw.
  • Dias now holds the 18th fastest Division III time and third fastest regional time in the 400m.
  • Sane is 15th nationally in the 3000m, while Crow now stands in 21st. Sane is also in the top-ten nationally in the 5000m. Sane's 3000m time is third in the region and Crow's is fifth.
  • Sanderson is top five in the country and first in the region in the 5000m, while Girand is 11th nationally and third regionally.
  • JoJo Miller is 27th regionally in the 60m.
  • Diulus' time in the Mile is good for 15th regionally, one of ten MIT runners ranked in the top 43 in the region in the event.
  • MIT's Distance Medley Relay is tops in the country and in the east region.

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will compete at a pair of meets next weekend, with the team split between the Brown Invitational and the Springfield College Triangle Classic on Saturday, February 22.
