No. 3 Women’s Track and Field In Control After Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Junior Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) defended her NEWMAC pole vault title and tied the NEWMAC Championship meet record, clearing 4.00m (13'1.5"), as MIT totaled eight All-Conference honors on the opening day of the 2025 NEWMAC Women's Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Mount Holyoke College Turf and Track Complex. The Engineers currently lead the team standings with 92 points. 

THE BASICS:

  • Team Score: 1st of 10 (92 points)
  • Team Standings: MIT (92), Springfield (26.5), Coast Guard (18.5), Wheaton (16), Mount Holyoke (12), WPI (11), Wellesley (10), Smith (6), Babson (2), Salve Regina (1)

TOP PERFORMERS - Running Events:

  • 100m Prelims: Sophomore JoJo Miller (Marietta, Ga.) advanced to Saturday's final with a third place time of 12.38.
  • 10000m: First year Ava Hartman (New Orleans, La.) earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors for the first time in her career with a winning time of 37:53.54.

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events:

  • Pole Vault: MIT dominated the pole vault, sweeping All-Conference honors behind Howard's NEWMAC, facility and personal record mark. First year Elise Doyle (Danville, Calif.) and junior Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) shared All-Conference second team honors, with each clearing 3.65 meters (11'11.75").
  • Hammer Throw: MIT swept All-Conference honors in the hammer behind Macy Brennan's (Westlake, Ohio) winning score of 49.29m (161'8"). Junior Lilia Ould-Hammou (Metuchen, N.J.) was second with a throw of 47.26m (155'0").
  • Javelin Throw: The Engineers earned another sweep in the Javelin, as junior Elaine Wang (West Des Moines, Iowa) took gold with a throw of 40.73m (133'7") and first year Olivia Carpenter (St. Louis, Mo.) was second with a mark of 37.90 meters (124'4").
  • Long Jump: Katie Kempff (St. Charles, Ill.) finished on the podium, taking third with a mark of 5.42m.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The top two finishers in each event earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors.
  • Howard's mark in the pole vault is the sixth best in Division III this season. Along with Howard, Doyle and Surace also topped the previous facility record. 
  • Brennan broke into the Division III top 50 in the hammer, recording the 48th best mark nationally.
  • Wang's mark in the javelin was a new facility record.

  • Day two of the 2025 NEWMAC Track and Field Championships will begin on Saturday, April 26 at 10:30 AM.
