Women’s Track and Field Leads After Opening Day of NCAA Division III Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – Paced by a third-place performance in the discus by senior Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio), the MIT women's track and field team earned six All-America honors on the opening day of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute's Outdoor Track & Field facility. The Engineers are currently in first place in the overall team standings with 17 points.  

THE BASICS:  

  • Team Score: 1st of 29 (17 points) 
  • Top Five Team Scores: 1. MIT (17); 2. Augustana  (14); T3. SUNY Geneseo (13); T3. Wis. - Eau Claire (13); 5. Washington U. (10) 

HOW IT HAPPENED - Field Events: 

  • Pole Vault: Junior Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) tied for fifth, clearing 3.85m (12' 7.5") to pick up three points for MIT. Howard passed on the first height and cleared at both 3.75m and 3.85m but did not pass the fourth progression. Classmate Hailey Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) was 14th, clearing 3.75m (12' 3.5").
  • Discus: Boykin and classmate Emily Ball (West Des Moines, Iowa) each earned a spot on the podium earning MIT eight points. Boykin was third with a throw of 45.12m (148' 0") on her second attempt and Ball was seventh with a mark of 41.90m (137' 5") on her final throw of prelims.  
  • Javelin: Junior Elaine Wang (West Des Moines, Iowa) picked up a big point with an eighth-place finish for MIT. Wang's second attempt traveled 40.44m (132' 8"), moving her into sixth place. She would eventually finish in eighth on the strength of her second attempt.  

HOW IT HAPPENED - Track Events: 

  • 1500m (Prelim): Grad student Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) and senior Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) each punched their ticket to Saturday's final. Roeder was second in heat two and sixth overall in 4:30.98 and Crow was fourth in heat two and tenth overall in 4:31.75. 
  • 3000m Steeplechase (Prelim): Sophomore Liv Girand (New York, N.Y.) advanced to Friday evening's final, finishing sixth in heat one and tenth overall in 10:49.09. 
  • 4x400m Relay Prelim: Senior Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.), juniors Shreya Kalyan (Troy, Mich.) and Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) and senior Marina Miller (Sr. | Bel Air, Md.) finished second in the second heat and third overall, advancing to Saturday's final with a time of 3:45.67. 
  • 10000m: Junior Kate Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) finished fourth with a personal best of 34:48.601 to earn a spot on the podium.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Boykin claimed her 14th career All-America award, finishing with All-American honors in the discus for the third year in a row. 
  • Ball was an All-American in the discus for the third straight year after finishing seventh in both 2023 and 2024. 
  • Howard captured All-America honors, improving on her previous finish at outdoor nationals after finishing 21st in 2024.  
  • Surace earned Second Team All-America honors while making her second outdoor appearance. She was third overall last year at outdoor nationals and was also an All-American during the indoor season, finishing as the national runner-up.
  • Wang's eighth place finish in the javelin is the first All-America honor in her career. 
  • Sanderson was making her second appearance in the Outdoor National 10000m, she improved nine spots from her 13th place finish 2024 to earn First Team All-America accolades.

NEXT UP: 

  • Action continues from Geneva tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM with Boykin set to return in the shot put at 2:00 PM and Girand running in the steeplechase final at 7:35 PM. 
  • Also in action Friday for MIT, senior Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.) will run in the 400m Prelim at 3:15 PM, junior Krystal Montgomery (San Jose, Calif.) will run in the 800m Prelim at 4:15 PM.
