WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Sophomore Elaine Wang (West Des Moines, Iowa) took first place in the javelin and junior Katelyn Howard (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was the winner in the pole vault as the No. 3 MIT women's track and field team opened the two-day Williams College Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza (FIRE) on Friday afternoon at Lee Track.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

• Javelin: Wang's winning throw came on her second attempt with an effort of 37.81m (124'1"). First year Amelia Bronhard-Yates (Ringoes, N.J.) finished fourth with a throw of 34.81m (114'2"). Senior Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) and first year Olivia Carpenter (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 10th (29.68m) and 12th (29.36m), respectively. 
• Pole Vault: Howard was the only competitor in the field to clear a height over 4.00m, winning the event at the 4.07m progression after clearing 4.02m. Haily Surace (Snohomish, Wash.) was eighth for MIT, clearing 3.57m.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Howard's mark in the pole vault was a new personal record, topping her previous mark of 4.00m, and is the second best in Division III this season.
