MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – MIT's
Meredith Wu was named the NEWMAC Field Hockey Offensive Athlete of the Week while
Maeve Zimmer was selected as the Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 28. The honors are the first for both student-athletes.
In a 2-0 week for the Engineers, Wu produced two goals and an assist. Last Wednesday, she scored in the 13th minute at No. 9 Amherst College as MIT went on to capture a 2-1 victory (2-0 in the shootout). In a 5-2 win over Clark University on Saturday, Wu registered the first goal of the game after 3:02 elapsed and earned an assist on the Engineers' final goal, which came in the 54th minute.
In the cage, Zimmer collected 13 saves and allowed two goals. In the shootout victory at Amherst, she generated eight saves during regulation and stopped all four attempts in the shootout. In 53 minutes of action against Clark on Saturday, she made five saves and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard until the 48th minute.
MIT returns to action on Saturday, October 4 when it travels to NEWMAC rival Springfield College for a 4:00 PM game.
