Football Falls to Becker by 17-10 Final on Alumni Day

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: Becker 17, MIT 10

- Records: MIT (0-2); Becker (1-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: On Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium, the MIT football team dropped a 17-10 home final to Becker College in non-conference action on Alumni Day. The Engineers trailed 17-0 and closed to within a touchdown late, but were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick in the seven-point final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The MIT defense was solid in the first quarter as the Engineers stopped Becker on a fourth and one situation with 5:20 left in the period. With just 25 seconds remaining in the first, sophomore Mitch Maisel (Newtown, Pa.) picked off Becker in a first and goal situation and returned the ball to the 24-yard line.

- Becker got on the board with 4:16 left before halftime as quarterback Nas Sinkfield-Shelton scored from six yards out on the quarterback keeper for the 7-0 edge. The Hawks weren't done as they intercepted MIT quarterback Udgam Goyal (Frisco, Texas) with 56 seconds left in the first half and on first down, Jacob Holmes scored on a run off the right side for the 14-0 halftime margin.

- The lone points of the third period came with 24 seconds left as Holmes boomed in a 39-yard field goal for the 17-0 score.

- MIT got on the board with 10:33 left in the game as senior Tucker Cheyne (Avon, Conn.) knocked in a 24-yard field goal to cut the margin to 17-3. The Engineers found the end zone with 1:18 remaining with an eight-play, 39-yard drive that took just 1:17 and was capped by a six-yard touchdown pass to junior Jared Hanson (Benicia, Calif.).

- On the onside kick attempt, Cheyne had a high-bouncing kick that just tipped off the hands of an Engineer before being recovered by Becker to seal the victory for the Hawks.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Goyal completed 23-of-41 pass attempts for 193 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Eddy Garcia-Montes (Miami, Fla.) caught seven passes for 94 yards and Hanson had nine catches for 64 yards and a TD. On the ground, freshman John Robertson (Brentwood, Tenn.) was the leading rusher with 69 yards on 14 attempts.

- Defensively, seniors Kodiak Brush (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Anthony Emberley (Longmont, Colo.) led MIT with nine tackles each as the Engineers ended the game with eight tackles for loss and three interceptions. For Becker, LaDarrius Carter led all tacklers with 11 stops that included five solo stops and two tackles for loss.
