Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: The opening set was a back-and-forth affair as there were 23 ties and 10 lead changes. A 6-1 spurt gave UW-W a 19-15 lead. MIT battled back, tying the score twice, the second at 21, courtesy of a hitting error. The Warhawks replied with a pair of kills and a block to claim set point. Kills by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior
Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) along with a hitting error kept the Engineers alive. After a UW-W kill, MIT used kills from junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) and Margetts to go ahead, 26-25. The Warhawks capitalized on a kill and a hitting error to reclaim the lead. Another Margetts kill kicked off a brief exchange of points as a kill from Keller knotted the set at 28. UW-W countered with back-to-back kills to win the set.
Â
-
Set 2: There were 13 ties and nine lead changes in the second stanza. The Warhawks used a block and a hitting error to create a 22-18 lead, their largest of the set. A UW-W hitting error sparked a string of five unanswered points, which featured two Keller kills, a kill from Edwards, and an ace by first-year
Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio). A pair of miscues resulted in set point for the Warhawks at 24-23. The Engineers went back in front following a serving error and a kill by Keller. However, UW-W generated three straight kills to capture the 27-25 victory.
Â
-
Set 3: A 10-3 run helped the Warhawks establish a 14-8 advantage. MIT chipped away at the deficit and tied the score three times before UW-W recorded a pair of kills that gave it match point at 24-22. The Engineers capitalized on a hitting error and a block by Rozario and sophomore
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.), however, the Warhawks responded with a kill. MIT countered with a kill from Gragg and an ace by sophomore
Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) to take a 26-25 edge. Both teams traded points until UW-W capitalized on a serving error, a block, and an ace to clinch the 30-28 win.
