THE BASICS:
Â
- Location: SPIRE Institute (Geneva, Ohio)
Â
- The Lead: Led by a national championship in the long jump by junior
Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), the No. 15 MIT men's track and field team sits in a tie for fifth place with 10 points after day one at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Trailing Ahmir Johnson of Rowan by just over three inches heading into the final attempt, Wei unloaded a jump of 25 feet, 10.25 inches to pick up the outdoor title and complete the season sweep of the indoor and outdoor championships. The jump was the third-longest in NCAA Division III history, broke a 48-year old meet record and shattered the MIT record by nearly a foot.
Â
- Earlier in the day in the discus, first-year
Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished 15th overall with a throw of 156 feet, three inches after he entered the event as the No. 20 seed.
