THE BASICS:
Â
- Location: SPIRE Institute (Geneva, Ohio)
Â
- The Lead: Led by day-three individual national championships by senior
Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.), junior
Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and first-year
Luka Srsic (Worthington, Ohio), the No. 15 MIT men's track and field team finished in third place with a total of 40 points at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The historic day of three individual titles for the Engineers started with Wei, who qualified second in the hurdle prelims on Thursday. He ended up crossing in a winning time of 14.05 seconds to finish .12 seconds ahead of
Jayson Ekiyor of Bethel (Minn.) and shatter his own MIT school record by a whopping .27 seconds.
Â
- In the pole vault, Srsic passed on the first height before clearing 15 feet, three inches and on his third attempt, he cleared 15 feet, nine inches to advance and remain in the competition. From there with 12 competitors, the No. 1 seed picked up momentum and with the winning height of 16 feet, 8.75 inches, Srsic tied a 22-year old school record set by
Nate Ball in 2005.
Â
- Graduate student
Liam Ackerman (Miami, Fla.) came in as the seventh seed and finished in 10th place with a clearance of 15 feet, nine inches.
Â
- In the 800-meter final, senior
Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.) qualified as the top seed with a personal-best time of 1:50.45 and followed that with another PR of 1:50.19 to win the final by .35 seconds and complete his sweep of the NCAA indoor and outdoor national championships.
