The Lead: The nationally-ranked No. 19 MIT women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to four following a 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 victory over Wellesley College in NEWMAC action on Tuesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: MIT jumped out to a 7-1 lead and maintained a small cushion during the early stages of the set. An ace by
Mikayla Tansil brought Wellesley within 12-7, however, this was as close as it would get as a serving error kicked off a 13-6 set-ending run by the Engineers.
Â
-
Set 2: MIT gradually built a 10-3 advantage after a kill by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.). The Blue capitalized on a pair of errors, but the Engineers' lead grew to 17-9. A kill from
TylerBell Smith and a block by Smith and
Rachel Xu kept Wellesley within striking distance. MIT responded by winning eight of the final nine points to capture a 25-12 win.
Â
-
Set 3: Back-to-back kills by Xu along with a hitting error gave the Blue a 4-1 lead. A kill from sophomore
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) and two hitting errors evened the score, but Wellesley used a Xu kill and a block by
Kennedy Mayo and Xu to inch ahead. Sparked by another Gragg kill, the Engineers rattled off seven unanswered points to claim the lead. The Blue stayed close as it came within two points on two occasions, the last at 15-13 on a hitting error by the hosts. A four-point spurt created some breathing room and fueled a 10-3 run that wrapped up the match.
