The Lead: No. 22 MIT scored twice in the first nine minutes of play before going on to defeat WPI, 2-1, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Graduate student
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) put MIT on the board following 51 seconds of action. After WPI broke up a penalty corner, junior
Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) corralled the ball and passed it to Forester who was waiting in front of the goal for the score.
Â
- Sophomore
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) put MIT up 2-0 courtesy of a goal in the ninth minute. She stole the ball at midfield, dribbled through the defense and unleashed a long shot from just inside the arc which found its way to the back of the cage.
Â
- WPI's
Abigail Rauch ended the shutout in the 39
th minute when she deflected the rebound of a saved shot during a penalty corner.
Â
- MIT almost increased its cushion in the 51
st minute. After a WPI penalty corner, MIT took the ball and raced down the field. In the circle, Forester drew WPI goalie
Ella Moreau out of the cage, but Rauch came up with the defensive save and cleared the ball away. MIT controlled the action down the stretch, generating an 8-0 margin in shots (five on goal) and a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners but it could not add to its lead.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- First year
Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made two saves in the first half as junior
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) turned away one shot in the second stanza. WPI's Moreau finished with 14 saves.
Â
- MIT led the way in shots (24-9), shots on goal (17-5), and penalty corners (17-9).
